Doctor Who 33.14

Richard E. Grant, Alex Kingston. Takes too long to get going but the second half is a treat. Clever and exciting. Explaining Clara and introducing John Hurt as… The Doctor. Cool. 9/10

Doctor Who 33.12

Even without the gimmick of a Doctor-less first act this one is a delight from start to finish.
Diana Rigg and Rachael Stirling are both simply excellent guest stars.
There is a great mixture of humour and menace.
The final scene (Angie and Artie) is pretty bad, it must be said, but no matter! The rest is a classic.

Ashley Walters. Some pretty cool ideas here, but the dreary execution takes some of the fun out of it. Lots of running up and down corridors. Plus the three guest characters are paper thin, and uninteresting. 8/10

Doctor Who 33.8

Emilia Jones. A fairly light and, to be honest, boring story that takes ages to get going. And, in the end, amounts to nothing. The Doctor isn’t onscreen for much of the first act, which doesn’t help. Clara is certainly a fascinating new character, but this feels like the show is all about her. But that’s not my problem with this episode. I just though the story was weak. Great visuals, yes, and Matt Smith was amazing. But the leaisurely pace and lack of story let it down. First weak episode since “Vincent and the Doctor.” 5/10

A very different take on a DW story. Clever and enjoyable.
Ending is a bit generic and it’s very annoying that Rory and Amy are still around. This would have been a fine send off. But, no… the show ends with them still part of the TARDIS crew. Enough already!
Must say, I LOVED Jemma Redgrave.

Doctor Who 33.3

Ben Browder. Another fun, epic adventure. This one has a great set-up and executes it perfectly, incorporating various Western tropes very well. It loses its way completely when the Doctor gets angry and has to be talked down by Amy. Her only significant scene in the whole story. Pity they had to make the Doctor behave in such an uncharacteristic way to accomplish it. Episode would have been better with Amy and Rory, and without the whole Doctor-holds-Jex-at-gunpoint nonsense. The ending is strong, but that middle section mars enjoyment considerably. 8/10
