10:30 Corner Gas
11:00 Burn Notice
Corner Gas. Season 3, Episode 16. Another snippet of life in small-town Saskatchewan. Credit Cards, a Police Physical and the art of being a good confidant are the plot elements that combine to make this episode. Oscar & Hank get most of the big laughs, but the funniest moment goes to Wanda. She and Brent are discussing poor production values in some new movies when a boom mike falls into shot and hits her on the head. She pushes it away and they continue the scene. Comedy gold.
Burn Notice. Episode 9. The best show of Summer 2007 reaches it's ninth episode with formula now well in place. The A-story concerns a kidnapping, as Michael, Fiona and Sam have to get a house-sitter's girlfriend back from a vicious gang, who - mistakenly - believe that he's a millionaire. The B-story concerns Michael's Burn Notice itself, as a goverment pencil-pusher makes contact and tells Michael his situation could be re-assessed. The pace is fast, the story has clever twists and the action/violence is surprisingly visceral. Jeffrey Donovan is a real revelation in this role. Staring down the barrel of a gun he manages to convey ultra-cool fearlessness to his foe, and show the audience at home that he really is scared and vulnerable. His chemistry with Gabrielle Anwar is off the scale at this stage and their final scene, staring wordlessly at one another after he gives her the birthday present is worth the price of admission alone.
