Friends. Season 2, Episode 20. "The One with the Bullies"
The first really weak episode. At this stage the strengths of Friends have been well established: soap opera tales, and good characters that viewers can relate to.
This episode comes after the (superb) Eddie story arc and it really falls flat. Suddenly the show isn't about things that can/do happen to real people (having a difficult roommate, or losing a great one) and it's completely in sitcom territory. Bullies arrive in the Central Perk and steal Chandler's hat!!? Only on a sitcom. Meanwhile, Monica suddenly becomes addicted to the stock market. Oh dear, only on a sitcom.
Even more odd: Phoebe drives to go meet her natural father. But sits outside in her cab, afraid to go in. Didn't the show already do this plotline?
Weird. Disappointing.
