08:00 Moonlight
09:00 Kyle XY
10:00 Supernatural
Moonlight. Episode 5. Every week, it seems, I find something new to like/love about this show. I'm even starting to warm to Sophia Myles. Wow. First off, I love the private eye aspects of the show. There are only a couple of scenes like that in this fifth episode, but I really loved them. Mick as the brooding, lonely pi tracing a lost girl - through a seedy world - for her decent parents. And what great casting! The parents (who only had a few scenes) absolutely radiated decency. Good, honest folk. Turning to Mick to help them. I love that kind of stuff. Likewise, the casting on the daughter was pitch perfect. Beautiful and melancholy in equal measure.
Apart from the private eye stuff, I loved the chemisty between Mick and Beth. Alex O'Loughlin is adept at comedy. Who knew?
Mix in the usual slick visuals and all-action finale and you have yet another winning episode of Moonlight.
Kyle XY. Season 2, Episode 2. Hot on the heels of it's best ever episode, the show raises the bar and delivers - once again - it's best ever episode. And unlike the season premier, which was marred by low production values when it needed new sets and pyrotechnics, this is a flawless episode. Largely because it is story-driven and character-driven, as opposed to event-driven.
Having spent a season riding on the mystery of "Who Is Kyle XY?" the show doesn't miss a beat when it side-steps into a whole new world of tension and conflict. I've seldom seen a show re-invent itself so well (House? Veronica Mars? Prison Break?). Kyle's web of lies - in an earnest attempt to put his life back together - has generated a whole new set of problems. The best scenes are the ones with Declan, and the best cast member is Marguerite MacIntyre.
Supernatural. Episode 10. Now this is more like it: a high-concept storyline with exceptional character work. The boys are trapped in a haunted asylum and - while watching them fight the evil within - we get to learn a lot about the relationship between the brothers. While it recalls the best episodes of The X-Files, this show has a tone and visual style all it's own. And I love the idea of ghost hunters who pull out guns and blast away at spooks.
Highlight? Kyle XY
