The Rockford Files. Season 2, Episode 9. "Chicken Little Is a Little Chicken"

Delightful. James Garner and Stuart Margolin make a superb comedy team.

The character of Angel Martin had appeared in three episodes before this, as a supporting character who pretty much stole the show. This time out Angel is the focus of the story. And it's nothing short of wonderful. Basically, Angel borrows Jim's car and stashes some money in it. Hot money. He also asks Jim to find an ex-con buddy of his who owns him money. He says. In fact, Angel is leaving out large parts of the story. Pretty soon Jim is in a lot of trouble. Without knowing exactly what is going on, at any stage.

The first two-thirds of the episode are a treat. Jim and Angel are a lot of fun to watch, and the viewer can't help buy chuckle as the story gets more and more complicated. The final third is a tad weaker. It hangs on Jim setting up an elaborate con, and it relies on everyone playing along just right. Even though things go slightly wrong - to funny effect - everything pretty much works out and the viewer can't help but be incredulous at how lucky it was for Jim and Angel that the bad guys were so easy to manipulate.

A minor quibble. This episode contains two star-quality performances and more heart laughs than any other episode of The Rockford Files thus far.
