Gotham 1.4
The is the first episode that is primarily a case-of-the-week story. And, as such, it pretty much works. The villain has a very vague weapon (what’s up with that?) but the story zips along and keeps the interest. Some of the sidebar stuff works, and some completely falls flat. But the show is enjoyable and it looks positively gorgeous. 8/10
Gotham 1.2
Lili Taylor. It’s a mixed bag.
Some elements work:
- The show is at it’s best when Bullock and Gordon are on screen and on the case.
- The character of the Penguin is compelling. One senses it will be fun to watch him rise up from rock bottom.
- The character of Catwoman is also enjoyable to watch, and it seems like she is really in a position to impact upon the main story arc.
Some elements don’t work:
- Bruce is all wet. And Alfred is needlessly aggressive and creepy. Their scenes together (with or without Jim) are unpleasant to watch.
- Fish Mooney is a silly character. Badly acted. And the scenes with Falcone don’t work either (here or in the pilot). This aspect of the show needs to be removed asap. It is camp and silly and undermines the grit of the rest of the show.
Overall. 6/10
