2014 BEST TV DRAMA #2 -> True Detective
Because…
- I was in love with this show from the first minute and I never wanted the final minute to arrive, I just wanted to stay in that place with those characters.
- The main reason for watching is to find out who these two men are, and what happens to them over the years. Each episode takes deeper and deeper into their psyches, building up a comprehensive and engrossing picture of their day-to-day lives, the beliefs and the world they inhabit.
- The performances are pitch perfect.
- There’s a tense, lengthy, and visually impressive action sequence.
- The murder investigation moves along at deceptively fast pace. Mostly the leads just appear to spend their time driving and talking in their car (which I love!) but the case is actually moving along bit-by-bit.
- The most powerful - loneliest - scenes were the non-case ones. And those are the ones that linger long after the lurid details of the case are forgotten.
- The series ticks all the boxes you could ever want ticked by a tv series. I laughed, I cried, I had a knot of tension is my stomach for most of the running time.
- This show even made the nitty gritty of boring paperwork seem riveting!!

First really ‘quiet’ episode. Mostly about the case. All riveting. Most powerful - loneliest - scenes were the non-case ones. Short snippets dotted here and there, telling us about the lives of the two men, all very haunting. 9/10
True Detective 1.6
Very little screentime for the case (but what we do see is very significant). Mostly just a dark character piece leading to a predictable, but extremely rewarding, final scene. 10/10
True Detective 1.5
Stunning. In some ways it was obvious where some elements of the story would going, but they laid their cards down much quicker than I anticipated. Particularly in the final third of the episode. The first third having cleared up the main storyline so far in the series. The middle third takes the show in a new direction, and the final third blows the story wide open. This is thrilling stuff. And when I think of the places the story could be be going… I get giddy with anticipation. 10/10
True Detective 1.4
Biker Gang. Very different to the earlier episodes. Which is good. A show with such a distinct voice could become oppressive to watch every week, even in such a short run. Episode skillfully creates a lot of tension in the second half and builds to a tense, lengthy, and visually impressive action sequence. 10/10
True Detective 1.3
Probably the least impressive episode so far, but is still head and shoulders above everything else on TV at the moment. First half had a lot of screentime devoted to the Hart marriage, while was absorbing but hardly new information. Rather it confirms what we suspect about Martin Hart and his values. So, good as it was, it felt like needless repetition. Annoying when time is so short on this show. The rest of the episode - with focus on Cohle, and big developments in the murder case - was as flawless as episodes one and two. 10/10
