Helix 2.3

Strange episode. Lots of very good moments here and there, but as an overall story? It didn’t really hang together. The final shot (the scream) was a highlight. And the attack of the creepy kids was another highpoint. Plus the sudden attack on Peter and Sarah… that was cool. But I wasn’t getting a sense of a story moving forward. Indeed, I wasn’t really getting a sense of a story at all. 7/10

Helix 2.2

The central set-up is very strong, so much so that I almost wish the show had ditched Alan and Julia. Don’t get me wrong. I like both characters, Julia’s season two storyline is very interesting and this episodes two best scenes concerned Alan (one with Sarah, one with Brother Michael). And yet, in a funny way, it is almost distracting me from the central story at this point in the season (Peter, Sarah and Kyle on an island, investigating a mystery). I’m sure that status quo is temporary and will change before long, probably with Peter’s death. Which will be a shame. Loving the show with him and Sarah acting as the main characters. Wish it could last longer. Also, I hope we hear very little about immortals this season. It’s the main weak element of the series. 8/10

Helix 2.1

Wow, the show has really reinvented itself. Loving Neil Napier and Matt Long, who (together with Jordan Hayes) are effectively the leads at this point. And an appealing group they make. Great set-up/situation. And the time jump stuff with Julia?! Wow, that is a twist I did not see coming. 9/10

Helix 1.13

Last episode has one major surprise twist and changes that make me wonder what season two will be like. Very different, it would appear. 8/10

Helix 1.12

Robert Naylor .

  • The villain doesn’t seem particularly menacing, certainly not as menacing as the show/characters would wish us to think he is.

  • And while the sudden, brutal death of a regular at the very end is genuinely unexpected and shocking, the script really has to work hard to make it happen. Taking something away from the impact.

  • This series sure has a propensity for killing off characters I like.

  • It might be more of a ‘comic book’ show, compared to when it first started out, but it’s certainly not dull.

8/10

Helix 1.11

Most of the surviving good guys (and good-ish guys) form a dysfunctional family and take cover. Still enjoyable, but the show seems to be getting less realistic and more comic book-ish as it moves towards the climax of season one. 8/10

Helix 1.8

  • There’s a dramatically different feel to this episode, isolating two of the characters.

  • Also: the show delivers a BIG reveal. Basically, telling us what has happened to Julia and taking the show further into scifi/fantasy territory.

  • The prolonged near-death situation affecting one of the regulars seems pointless at this stage, as we all know what is going to happen next.

Helix 1.9

Level X. Another strong episode, where all storylines move forward and revelations are made, but the mysteries get deeper and deeper.

A lot has changed since the first episode. The show has confidently created a world and populated it with a large cast of fascinating characters. On every level this show succeeds. 10/10

Helix 1.8

What a great balance of tension and mystery. Plus a large number of characters to like despite their highly questionable moral choices: Dr. Hiroshi Hatake, Major Sergio Balleseros, Daniel Aerov, Constance Sutton. Even the show’s clean cut hero - Dr. Alan Farragut - is on a slippery slope, at this stage. 10/10

Helix 1.7

Jeri Ryan joins the cast and is superb. No great surprise there. She brings all shades of menace to the table and wears a dazzling smile throughout.

Across the board, it’s another strong, story-driven episode. There’s a tad too much soap opera, however. The Sutton/Balleseros reveal was a tad obvious, and the sight of Sarah watching Farragut and Julia had me rolling my eyes. A love triangle we don’t need. 9/10

Helix 1.6

Luciana Carro . No major shocks this week, but some important reveals concerning the bigger picture of what’s happening. I am genuinely intrigued by everything we are learning. This feels like a show with lots and lots of story mapped out.

And this episode had a snappy visual style. Lots and lots of cuts. Which I love.

Such a satisfying show. 10/10

Helix 1.5

The White Room. A murder-mystery where we know the killer and all the characters are smart. At no stage are we ahead of any of them them, and that is cool to see.

It’s another episode where characters die off. Cast is dropping like flies!! And the story is moving forward at rapid pace.

Show obviously supposed to be Syfy’s answer to The Walking Dead (and maybe it is, I don’t watch so I don’t know) but it certainly has a lot of BSG in it’s DNA: lots of characters, lots of character conflict and we are often drawn to characters that appear to be ‘bad’. 10/10

Helix 1.4

It was a pretty good episode all the way through, but the ending was supremely shocking. On two fronts. One of my favourite characters has been killed off, and we get a very disturbing hint as to what is going on. 10/10

Really loving the cast and characters on Helix. I like the fact...

Really loving the cast and characters on Helix. I like the fact that half of them have a secret to hide, and the rest are cool. Some are both!

Helix 1.3

Day 3. Best episode so far. Fast moving. Utterly engrossing, with a distinct visual style. The characters (and their various allegiances) have been skillfully delineated with the result that even the most basic of conversations are charged with depth and meaning. Very satisfying to watch. Much as I enjoyed the first two hours, I went into this third hour with the idea that I might cut the show from my weekly schedule if it didn’t measure up. No chance now! This episode leaves things on a another major cliffhanger. I get the feeling the fun is only about to start. Uh-oh.

MVP: Kyra Zagorsky . 10/10

Helix 1.2

Second hour isn’t as tightly-scripted. There are too many new characters and it doesn’t really go anywhere. But the situation and casting still making for a (slightly) above average show. The hints dropped about what might be really going on, make the bigger picture seem interesting. 7/10

Helix 1.1

Tense first hour does a good job of establishing the characters and the situation. Billy Campbell makes a great lead. Been a fan since Crime Story and the guy still looks the same! 8/10
