Judy Greer. The scenes with Libby and Johnny were the best. By far.

• The main storyline concerned a dinner-for-four. Another example of the manipulative mind-games we have come to expect from Bill. While it was fun to watch the shenanigans, in a way, there was also an element of predictability to the proceedings that defused the enjoyment somewhat. Same old, same old.
  
• The Libby storyline was much stronger, but just as frustrating in the end. Her new romance appears to be making major progress. Which is great and just what the character needs. Then a sudden visit from a policeman brings a storyline from earlier in the season back with a vengeance. These scenes are the best in the episode. After that drama has subsided, we get to see Libby crawling back into her shell and finding a reason to stay in the marriage. Disappointing. Same old, same old.

Masters Of Sex 2.6

Extraordinarily powerful episode. Right from the first scene. Covers many topics: love, sex, death, race, etc. Remarkable storytelling. So many changes here, it feels like the end of a season. 10/10

The Spoils Of Babylon 1.4

So much fun. Probably my favourite episode so far. Devon’s storyline (from a life under the sea to ‘acclaim’ as writer) was hilarious. This show is a hoot. 9/10

Masters Of Sex 1.11

Julianne Nicholson is superb, in a episode of many great moments. Powerful, sad, humourous, thoughtful… this was an example of the show at it’s very best. The idea of Masters speaking to an imaginary Virginia was a novel twist and it was well used, rapidly becoming more than a gimmick. As with the pilot, when Masters gets fired up about his work, it reminds of the best and most inspiring moments of shows like Babylon 5 when characters like Sinclair spoke about pushing over the final frontier of human knowledge. MoS is that kind of show. And the human drama is also excellent (witness Nicholson’s key scene). There’s also a good love story or two in in the mix. Easily one of the very best shows on TV right now. 10/10

Ashley Johnson . Too much time taken up with the Civil Defense stuff leads to the least interesting episode. Many characters have pivotal moments, yes, but they seem shoehorned into the story. The episode seems determined to make a heavy-handed comparison between the ‘disasters’ happening to the characters and the simulated ‘end of the world’ scenario. And it’s too obvious. And it takes up way too much screentime. It also must be said that the various revelations/changes are long overdue and are hardly worthy of an episode on their own. The aftermath of all this, however, promises to be more interesting. One would hope. 7/10
