A funeral brings all the regulars together for the final episode of season one. And we get to watch the tension building as we wait for these characters (that we have come to care about) to self-destruct in some way. Secrets and bad choices rule the day. And a great showdown between Maura and Ali. But there are great scenes for Sarah and Josh, too. A superb show across the board. Roll on season two! 10/10

- Flashback episode highlighting the complex Mort/Mark friendship. There is something incredibly touching and endearing about their basic needs and wants. Even if they don’t quite want the same thing.
- Emily Robinson is a revelation as Young Ali. Wow.

One of the best episodes. Watching the talent show was like watching a car crash in slow motion as the kids all abandoned Maura. Jeffrey Tambor had very little screentime in this episode, but was heartbreakingly superb in those final scenes.
Even before we got this far, this was a great episode. Ali finally has a quality storyline, worth watching and worth getting emotionally invested in, and Josh’s flaws grow more pronounced with every passing episode. Without Maura this would just be another show about selfish characters and it would be hard to like them and care, but because we care for Maura and her journey we want those around her to be… better people.

Another strong episode. Finally giving Ali a storyline. Maybe. Best scene: When Rob Huebel‘s Len grabbed the knife at the family dinner. 9/10

Bradley Whitford. The Sarah and Josh storylines take giant leaps forward. Very surprising, and impressive. By contrast, the Ali storyline is so stationery that it is starting to annoy me, and I’m starting to dislike the character. The last few seconds of the episode imply that she might have something more interesting going on next time. Here’s hoping. 9/10

Several powerful and very sad scenes. Most, but not all, of them revolving around Maura and her journey. Maura only gets about a quarter of the screen-time, as the show (wisely) followed all four characters equally. Ali is the least interesting in this episode, but both Sarah and Josh have a lot going on, and the show makes us care. About all the characters. But especially about Maura. We care about her. A lot. Tambor is magnificent. 10/10

Some changes from the original pilot. Still pretty much perfect, however. 10/10

Engrossing and flawless. Hits the ground running by successfully making us like and care about all of the characters. Remarkable. 10/10
