An engrossing hour which didn’t pay off in the way we were expecting. Which is kinda the show’s standard modus operandi at this stage. While it was gripping, it wasn’t as gut wrenching as many episodes this season. We could easily have expected a death or two this week (in either the Mike or Jimmy storylines) but the episode faded out with the status quo very much intact. However, based on that cliffhanger, it is under threat moving into season three… 9/10

Intense. Stomach churning storytelling from start to finish. Remarkable.
- The first big section was devoted to Chuck’s fall. And it was every bit as satisfying as we expected, wanted and hoped. In this scene, as well as other pivotal ones, Michael McKean is simply perfect in the role. And brings just exactly what is needed so that we never like the character. Even here when he is the only one in the right. And we know it. But he’s still too much of an ass for us to like.
- The second big section was devoted to Chuck confronting Kim and Jimmy. This was truly nail-biting as we waited to see which way Kim would go. And how this would impact on Jimmy (and the story) moving forward. What Kim does is vitally important. And Rhea Seehorn is so, so good in the role. All season, but in this scene in particular where Kim hears the truth, believe it and still goes to bat for Jimmy. Incredible work.
- There there was Mike. We got to see him put his badass plan into action and, in the really big section devoted to him, he learned that there are unfortunate consequences to his actions. This was a superb scene. Jonathan Banks is probably the most amazing actor on the show. And competition is tough.
- Jimmy also learned about consequences in the gripping final section of the episode. Where we (the audience) could see something bad was coming but when it hit… it really hit. And that was their cliffhanger ending, too. Next week will probably be even more intense…

I’ve enjoyed season 2 of Better Call Saul more than season 1. Largely because of Kim and her story arc.

- Most of this week’s screentime went to Kim and Chuck.
- We saw how Kim is dealing with the trouble she’s in. And her solution. Hard work, basically. The opposite of Jimmy.
- We also got some great insights in the character of Chuck. Some trivial reasons for his distaste of his brother, and (in the scene with Kim) a very real reason.
- But, after all that, the best scene was the Mike scene at the very end.
Better Call Saul 2.4
Wow. That was brilliant. The Mike story was intense, as was the Chuck/Jimmy showdown. Great Kim scene, too. Wow. 10/10
Better Call Saul 2.3
Strongest episode yet this season. Great dynamics between Jimmy and Kim. God, they are so mismatched, but I lover her nonetheless. Fab tension in this one, regarding the tape, etc. Can’t wait to see how that plays out. 9/10

- Of the two main characters, it is Mike at this stage who is the more interesting. Jimmy improves dramatically when dragged into Mike’s world.
- The scene with the two cops, in the interrogation room, is definitely one of the best scenes for that character since the show began. The show will improve the more Jimmy slips into that world, the closer he comes to becoming “Saul Goodman”.
- But the highlight of this episode was when Mike showed up at Nacho’s workplace. That conversation was thrilling. Mike is badass. Jonathan Banks is awesome.
- Chuck, meanwhile, continues to be a villain worthy of hisses and boos.
Better Call Saul 2.1
Kyle Bornheimer. The ending makes the story in this slow, but engaging, season opener which is all about character. Really enjoyed Kim in this one, seeing her pull against Jimmy then come around to his way of thinking and then - ultimately - convince him to do the ‘right’ thing without even being there. Melancholy conclusion. In a way, this would have been a good way to end season one. 8/10

The topic of Petrocelli came up during the week. Great 1970s series about a lawyer in Arizona. First time we ever saw Tony (in the 1970 movie The Lawyer) he was in the bathroom preparing to step into court.
Flash-forward to 2015 and another show about a lawyer in the southwestern desert. This time it’s Better Call Saul. First time we see Jimmy in flashback? Why, he’s in the bathroom preparing to step into court.

Definitely not the show I was expecting. Season one was a mixed bag, to say the least. A few magnificent episodes, certainly, but a lot of the storytelling was slow and character-driven in a way that was occasionally mildly-frustrating. Not a case of love-at-first-sight, the way it was with Breaking Bad and I can’t see it making my end-of-year Top Ten.

Mel Rodriguez . Surprisingly low-key ending to the season. Slow-paced, good story. Pivotal in the grand scene of things, one supposes. 8/10

Dennis Boutsikaris . Superb new storyline, very exciting and enjoyable. Funny. This could have aired as episode one and we wouldn’t have missed much. 10/10

Lane Garrison . Gotta be honest, getting away from Jimmy and the world around him was a real treat. Everything is moving so damn slowly. This was like watching a different show. This story was terrific, and Jonathan Banks was awesome. More of this, please! 10/10

Clea DuVall . First third is as funny as anything you’d see anywhere. After that it slows right down to focus on Chuck, and that sucks the joy right out of it. 8/10
