Gotham 2.8

Two best things about this: Erin Richards‘ performance, and Theo Galavan‘s villainy.

  • Richards is just so much fun to watch. And appears to be having fun playing Barbara. She brings her a-game to her scenes and the dynamic between her and Ben McKenzie is terrific. Barbara takes Jim to some dark places.
  • This was the was episode where Galavan tried to get Bruce to sign over his company, using the name of the Wayne murder. Clever. Sinister. Really makes him seem like a credible villain. The surprise at the end was that Jim arrested him. I presume this is part of the plan. But how exactly?

Gotham 2.7

Astonishingly violent in places, with some very satisfying moments of revelation for the characters.

  • Best: The Jim Gordon/Theo Galavan/Penguin storyline really worked because Jim finally put the clues together and saw through Galavan. Ups the stakes, moving forward. How much fun is that? The death of Penguin’s mother (and the various party goers) was quite shocking. This show is ceaselessly sadistic.
  • Worst: The Bruce/Selena/Silver storyline hit some very obvious beats. The cast make it work, but this is a kind of love triangle we have seen many times before. The only real plus here is that Selena (like Gordon) is now wise to the true nature of her real nemesis. Makes things interesting, moving forward.
  • Most Original: The Riddler stuff was also quite brilliant, it must be said. Overshadowed by other events, but this split-personality gimmick is proving to be a great way to intro the character.

Gotham 2.6

Another great episode. Balance between case and arc is perfect, and both are strong. Lot of darkness in the storytelling. 10/10

Gotham 2.3

The best thing here was the ending, which was a bit of a shock. It was also satisfying to see the next phase of Theo Galavan‘s plan go into effect (with him pretending to a heroic citizen who killed Valeska). 9/10

Well, just finished the first season of Gotham. It’s been...

Well, just finished the first season of Gotham. It’s been a season of ups and downs, to say the least, but it’s a fun show. Finale was disappointing in places, but it’s still a much better series than Agents of SHIELD.

Gotham 1.22

Gotham 1.20

Daniel Davis. Strong episode, with developments for several characters (Riddler, Penguin, Barbara). Erin Richards has been underused all season, but she gets some good stuff here. 10/10

Gotham 1.18

Colm Feore. Fairly pedestrian story, which follows a predictable course. The Penguin scenes are the best. As usual.  7/10

Gotham 1.17

David O'Hara, Jeffrey Combs. A real ensemble episode, giving many characters significant screentime. Two big twists, too. The twist in the Fish Mooney storyline was very grisly and a bit too over-the-top for me, but the surprise in the Alfred storyline was excellent. 9/10

Gotham 1.14

Maria Thayer, Julian Sands. Lots happening in various storylines, with the Robin Lord Taylor/David Zayas scenes being the best. Beyond that it was a pretty good case of the week, helped by making Harvey the focus and giving him someone to romance. Speaking of romance, I’m really enjoying Morena Baccarin on the show. 9/10

Gotham 1.13

Dash Mihok . Fairly pedestrian and predictable case-of-the-week. Fish/Penguin scenes were enjoyable but simplistic. 7/10

Gotham 1.12

Wow, that was a good episode! The case-of-the-week aspect was strong enough to sustain the episode on it’s own (particularly once the action switched to the precinct house), but the burgeoning gang war shenanigans between Falcone, Fish, Penguin and Sal Maroni made for rivetting viewing. 9/10
