Because the show brings to television a new rebel hero (who is flawed and fascinating). Portraying Masters as a ‘maverick’ gives the show the same edge as Breaking Bad, Dexter, etc.
Because the show is funny and sweet and edgy and intelligent. And both main characters are fantastic.
Because the audience feels a real emotional connection with everybody onscreen. All of the characters are easy to relate to, and we feel their needs and wants and pains and disappointments intensely.
Because Allison Janney is superb.
Because when Masters gets fired up about his work, it reminds me of the best and most inspiring moments of shows like Babylon 5 when characters like Sinclair spoke about expanding the frontier of human knowledge. MoS captures that feeling, makes us believe that these scientists are giants and heroes. [9.58]
