Five Lessons the Faltering Music Industry Could Learn From TV:

Good article.

There’s one part where it says that TV is NOW better than movies.

Always makes me laugh when I read that. I have a US TV Guide from 1986 (when Moonlighting was new) that says much the same thing. You know, that TV has SUDDENLY become better than movies. All of a sudden.

Listen, TV has ALWAYS been better than movies. Before Breaking Bad, we had Damages and The Shield, and before that we had Homicide and thirtysomething, and in the 80s there was St. Elsewhere and Hill Street Blues and Crime Story. Before that we had The Paper Chase and Rich Man Poor Man and Roots. In the 60s, it was Name Of The Game and Route 66 and Naked City. And in the 50s it was Honeymooners and Twilight Zone and Johnny Staccato.

And a hundred others. Every damn year since Phil Silvers started shouting at his men in 1955 there have a handful of superb shows on TV in every season. In every genre.

Funny TV shows that were funnier than funny movies, week after week.

Emotional TV shows that were more moving that emotional movies, week after week.

Thought-provoking TV shows that were more exciting than thought-provoking movies, week after week.

Week after damn week.

I’ve never seen a movie with a death scene as powerful as Sonny’s on Wiseguy.

I’ve never seen a movie with a marriage as uplifting as Eric & Tami’s on Friday Night Lights.

I’ve seen a movie with a career woman as admirable as Mary Tyler Moore.

And no movie has ever given us a hero to rival Captain Kirk.

That was almost fifty years ago, but yeah… TV has SUDDENLY become better than movies…
