Peter Woodward. Visually impressive, superbly cast, grim supernatural detective pilot.
The casting of Michael Harney and Currie Graham, plus the dark, colourless visuals, make this feel like an adult cop show along the same lines as Homicide or Law and Order. This helps make the fantasy sequences (fights, etc.) seem all the more extraordinary.
The colours have all been drained (just like Man of Steel, except here it seems appropriate) and the use of locations, angle and quick cuts mean the show is always interesting to look at.
Woodward is a fantastic villain, but John Glover almost steals the show from him with a take on The Devil that rivals the great Ray Wise in Reaper.
The detective work here is basic but satisfying. Stone follows a clue and the trail leads to the killer’s hideout. Nothing very elaborate. Mainly this episode concerns itself with setting up the premise. Something it does very well indeed.
