11.00 People Like Us
People Like Us. Episode 1. "The Managing Director" Roy Mallard and his documentary crew spend a day following the managing director of a high-technology firm in Nottingham and getting to know his workforce.
The elements that make this such a great series are in place here.
1. The show's witty use of language appears every time Roy narrates something.
2. The comedy comes not from Roy being inept and disruptive (thought he can certainly be both) but from the fact that everyone he meets is much more inept and clueless. Roy, in fact, comes across as nice and helpful. And, as a consequence, it's even funnier when his subjects direct their wrath upon him. In this episode sales director Lisa Bell drives off giving Roy the finger despite the fact he tried to help her out and she, herself, is responsible for all that went wrong.
3. The show can be very touching and sad sometimes. Dave, the employee who gets fired in this opening episode, is not the most poignant of the characters featured in the show's twelve episodes, but he's certainly a good indication of what was/is to follow.
4. Roy is never seen, but the show hints about him from time to time.
